Sydney, Australia – A new report from SiteMinder, the leading global hotel revenue and distribution platform, reveals that hotel websites have outperformed all other booking sources in revenue per booking in 2024, by as much as 60%.

The report, SiteMinder Hotel Booking Trendsbased on more than 125 million reservations – the largest volume of hotel reservations on a single technology platform – shows that hotel websites generated an average of US$519 per hotel reservation last year. This figure was 8.5% higher than the previous year and more than 60% higher than the value per booking via OTAs ($320); more than 35% above global distribution systems (US$380); and more than 15% above wholesalers, DMCs and tour operators combined (US$446).

The year-over-year increase in the value of direct bookings has enabled hotel websites to maintain or improve their position among the top sources of total revenue for all major travel destinations, for first time. Hotel websites rank as the second largest driver of total revenue in four countries (Ireland, Portugal, South Africa and Spain) and in the top five in all other markets, behind OTAs in each.

James Bishop, SiteMinder’s vice president of ecosystem and strategic partnerships, says the results show that travelers are not only looking to hotel websites to grow their numbers, but also spending more when they do so.

“When booking direct, travelers choose higher value rooms, stay longer and add extras, and each of these factors represents a tremendous opportunity for hotels to offer these exclusive deals. This certainly doesn’t mean hoteliers should ignore third-party chains in 2025; they continue to offer unique and unrivaled reach and simplicity, as evidenced by their continued dominance in each of the top 12 lists of global hotel booking revenue generators. But what our findings highlight is the importance of hotels offering a simple booking experience, accompanied by seamless payments and strong security, just like third-party channels do so well.

The annual SiteMinder Hotel Booking Trends The report is the authority on hotel bookings in 20 of the world’s most established destinations. It is based on booking data from more than 44,500 SiteMinder hotel customers, who used SiteMinder’s platform in 2024 to secure more than 125 million reservations valued at more than $50 billion in revenue.

A deeper analysis of SiteMinder’s 2024 data shows:

  • The resurgence of international travel has been fueled by the accelerated return of Asian hotel guests. Chinese company Trip.com climbed or debuted on 40% of the world’s top 12 revenue lists, while Asia-Pacific company Agoda rose 35%.
  • At US$200 on average, hotel room rates increased in 65% of markets, with the strongest growth seen in Thailand, Portugal and Spain. Friday became the most expensive night in 85% of countries, and Sunday the most affordable night in 65%.
  • On average, 78% of hotel stays worldwide were for just one night, while 11% of visits lasted three nights or more. The longest stays took place in Portugal and the shortest stays in Taiwan.
  • Travelers have been booking earlier and canceling less, with the average booking window extending to 32 days and cancellations falling below 20%. Ireland had the longest booking lead time (47 days), while Indonesian hotels had the lowest cancellation rate (12%).
  • Arrivals were spread more evenly throughout the year, thanks to higher demand for the Northern Hemisphere spring. However, the busiest month in 50% of markets was more concentrated, notably August in Spain and December in South Africa.

“As trends evolve to reflect the dynamism of today’s travelers, hospitality businesses must remain flexible and responsive. SiteMinder’s report shows that traveler preferences are anything but fixed, so those who can adapt quickly will be best positioned to succeed,” says Bishop. “In 2025, advantage will come from harnessing data-driven insights, building flexibility into strategies and seizing new opportunities. Properties that adopt this approach will not only establish themselves as leaders in their markets; they will set a new standard for a changing industry.
